Past life Is it true that if one has done bad deeds(karma) in the past, they have to suffer it in this life? If this is true, please let me know some measures to settle it . You should believe in the deeds of the past life because when a child is born; suppose a child is born with some illness; he has not done anything in this life. If we believe in Karmas and their fruits, then naturally, there is a framework or scope within which it lies. That is natural.

So, what is that scope? If Karmas exist then how do they work? If we believe in Karma then looking at the society and the world at large, we have to believe that past lives exist and that an account prevails. Suppose if you go from Himachal to Delhi or Mumbai or anywhere; and if you have a criminal record here, it will not exist there.

The Karmas that you have here will persist there too. The way you go from one society to another, you will not get rid of your past deeds. Similarly, as the soul acquires a new body, does not mean the old Karmas are left behind. So, to get rid of the bond of Karmas, God says na cha māṁ tāni karmāṇi nibadhnanti dhanañjaya udāsīna-vad āsīnam asaktaṁ teṣhu karmasu….Bhagavad Gita 9.9 My Karmas do not bind me because I do them without any attachment.

A person who does the deeds without any attachment that is, with some stoicism does not get stuck with the tree of Karmas. ūrdhva-mūlam adhaḥ-śhākham aśhvatthaṁ prāhur avyayam chhandānsi yasya parṇāni yas taṁ veda sa veda-vit….Bhagavad Gita 15.1 Life is an inverted tree.

This is the root. All thoughts of the human come from here. These are the branches and the fruits are there down. The one who knows this knows all the Vedas. asaṅga-śhastreṇa dṛiḍhena chhittvā….Bhagavad Gita 15.3-4 If you have to cut this, you need to rise above the attachment.

Whether it is small or big, humans have an attachment with their Karma, with things, with whatever they have achieved, in possessions, etc. This attachment is the cause of all pain. Whether in any person or self or God or anything. When the attachment/indulgence is not fulfilled, it causes grief.

So, if you want to get rid of this, It is not that you did something like Pind Daan at Gaya ji and you got rid of all your Karmas.. However, if you accept everything in your life as God’s grace, as nature’s gift and live with gratitude, you will be free of all bondages. And the person who does not have any desires at the end gets free of Karmas. He is then free from the cycle of birth and death.

Someone, who has even a single desire will have to come back to fulfil it. And if you come back to fulfil one desire, it is a Raktabija as mentioned in Durga Saptashati, it will give rise to a thousand more. So, being desireless is the path to salvation. Because this is a very deep question. Billions of people are suffering because of this. If you want to rise above this, then you have to take a big decision.
